About

1989 - The Business Began....

Holdsworth Packaging was established on the 1st of May 1989 by Chris Holdsworth from the spare bedroom at his home in Dore, Sheffield. Chris began by selling self-adhesive tapes, carrier bags and stretch film. As the business grew, friends and family were called upon to help by storing goods in garages and homes, so that Chris could keep up with the requirements of his newly found customer base. As the customer base and product range grew, the company needed premises and began by renting a barn in Dore Village (to store the bulky bubble and corrugated rolls).

Our first company vehicle was purchased in June 1989, a fuel guzzling (12 miles to the gallon) Ford Transit van. A former college friend, Matt Smith, became the first employee, driving the company vehicle. The company's first venture into cartons came in November of the same year when Chris picked up on the idea that Supermarkets disposed of good quality boxes. Chris and Matt would ask the supermarkets for their unwanted boxes, then offered them to customers who had a requirement for products without the want or need for new boxes.

1990s - Cementing the Foundations and Investing in Machinery

As the business grew, so did the need for staff. Joan Gill joined the company and would become an integral part of the business until her retirement 22 years later. We also made the leap to our first premises on Archer Road, Millhouses in 1990 and stored goods in Laycocks building, the site of which is now the Sainsbury's supermarket.

In 1991 we began to cement our foundations and purchased land on Carley Drive. The initial build was a unit 3000SqFt in size and took around 5 months to build.

In 1993 we made our first venture into manufacturing and bought a single pass Autobox machine. This gave us the ability to manufacture bespoke cardboard boxes in house. It became evident that there was a growing market for small runs of bespoke boxes and we were able to provide this niche service to the local area.

Our investment continued in 1996 with the purchase of our roller press die cutter. This gave us the capability to manufacture more styles of boxes by using bespoke tooling.

The machine was purchased based on its size - capable of running die cuts to any length and up-to 2m on the width - and ease of set up. To date, the Shearline is continually used for regular repeats and new jobs.

In 1997 we purchased our first 7.5t vehicle, an Iveco Cargo.

2000s - Into the Millennium....

In 2002 we began our expansion of the current site and purchased additional land to the side of the original building. We added a further 4000 sq ft with an extra loading bay, mezzanine floor, car parking.

In 2004 we became a Limited Company and became fully computerised!

2007 brought further investment in machinery. We purchased a Sodeme semi-automatic stitcher, though not in working order. Don Gill, Joan's husband, was a retired electronics genius and spent days (weeks, months) restoring and repairing the Sodeme. Today, the machine is used daily and is an integral part of our business in the finishing process.

In 2008 our first website went live.

2010 - 2014 Machinery, Retirement, Advertising, Parties....

In 2010 we were the chosen company to manufacture the carton trays for the 2011 government census, an order that required 100 tons of paper.

In 2011 we integrated a brand new Autobox Kinetic box making machine. This ran alongside our earlier model though the machine offered more efficiency in setting up and running. It also gave us the ability to manufacture even bigger boxes!

In 2012, Joan Gill retired from the business.

In 2014 we have made significant steps to update the business into modern times.

Our brochure launch, to tie in with our 25th Anniversary, was soon followed by the launch of our new website in October.

Investment has also continued throughout this year. We have integrated a semi-automatic gluer to our production line earlier in the year and in September 2014 we took delivery of a new Solarco box making machine. Alongside the Autobox, we now have the ability to run small runs of bespoke cartons as well as a wide range of corrugated wraps without the need for tooling. We are able to add benefits such as hand holes, drop-down sections as well as being able to print single colour onto small runs of bespoke cartons.

2015 - Another year of investment

In 2015 great measures have been made in the factory to facilitate and install a case maker, which went in at the beginning of July. The new machine will be able to manufacture and finish high volume boxes with the added option of a two colour flexographic print.

Moving Forward....

As our business grows and our manufacturing capabilities have increased, we will be able to not only continue to service our customer base with their existing requirements, but also offer them  new ways to pack and options to brand their packaging with little expense.

Chris' children, David and Elizabeth, have both been a part of the business during the last 5 years, working in both the factory and office. David's most recent employment has been the development of the new website and in tandem with our local contractor, they have been responsible for bringing the site into the modern era!

Chris is still very much a part of the business and oversees the operation, continuing to involve himself with existing and prospective customer enquiries.

We aim to continue to deliver the same service, care and attention to our customers as Chris did in the beginning of the business, though now our product range, manufacturing capabilities and expertise in the packaging market have significantly grown and improved, we hope that we can offer our customers and prospective clients a service second to none, with a range to suit.

May we encourage you to browse through our website, brochure and we feel confident that you will find something to interest you....and then we are only a phone call (and in the modern world - email, tweet!!!) away.
