Our History

1989
;
The Business Began....

Holdsworth Packaging was established on the 1st of May 1989 by Chris Holdsworth from the spare bedroom at his home in Dore, Sheffield. Chris began by selling self-adhesive tapes, carrier bags and stretch film.

As the business grew, friends and family were called upon to help by storing goods in garages and homes, so that Chris could keep up with the requirements of his newly found customer base.

As the customer base and product range grew, the company needed premises and began by renting a barn in Dore Village (to store the bulky bubble and corrugated rolls).

The Business Began....Part 2

Our first company vehicle was purchased in June 1989, a fuel guzzling (12 miles to the gallon) Ford Transit van. A former college friend, Matt Smith, became the first employee, driving the company vehicle. The company’s first venture into cartons came in November of the same year when Chris picked up on the idea that Supermarkets disposed of good quality boxes.

Chris and Matt would ask the supermarkets for their unwanted boxes, then offered them to customers who had a requirement for products without the want or need for new boxes.

;
Cementing the Foundations and Investing in Machinery

As the business grew, so did the need for staff. Joan Gill joined the company and would become an integral part of the business until her retirement 22 years later.

We also made the leap to our first premises on Archer Road, Millhouses in 1990 and stored goods in Laycocks building, the site of which is now the Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Cementing the Foundations and Investing in Machinery - Part 2

In 1991 we began to cement our foundations and purchased land on Carley Drive. The initial build was a unit 3000SqFt in size and took around 5 months to build.

In 1993 we made our first venture into manufacturing and bought a single pass Autobox machine. This gave us the ability to manufacture bespoke cardboard boxes in house. It became evident that there was a growing market for small runs of bespoke boxes and we were able to provide this niche service to the local area.

Our investment continued in 1996 with the purchase of our roller press die cutter. This gave us the capability to manufacture more styles of boxes by using bespoke tooling.

The machine was purchased based on its size – capable of running die cuts to any length and up-to 2m on the width – and ease of set up. To date, the Shearline is continually used for regular repeats and new jobs.

In 1997 we purchased our first 7.5t vehicle, an Iveco Cargo.

2000s
;
Into the Millennium....

In 2002 we began our expansion of the current site and purchased additional land to the side of the original building. We added a further 4000 sq ft with an extra loading bay, mezzanine floor, car parking.

In 2004 we became a Limited Company and became fully computerised!

2007 brought further investment in machinery. We purchased a Sodeme semi-automatic stitcher, though not in working order. Don Gill, Joan’s husband, was a retired electronics genius and spent days (weeks, months) restoring and repairing the Sodeme. Today, the machine is used daily and is an integral part of our business in the finishing process.

In 2008 our first website went live.

2010-2011
;
Machinery, Retirement, Advertising, Parties....

In 2010 we were the chosen company to manufacture the carton trays for the 2011 government census, an order that required 100 tons of paper.

In 2011 we integrated a brand new Autobox Kinetic box making machine. This ran alongside our earlier model though the machine offered more efficiency in setting up and running. It also gave us the ability to manufacture even bigger boxes!

2012/2013
;
Machinery, Retirement, Advertising, Parties....Part 2

Joan Gill had joined Chris Holdsworth shortly after Chris started the business and was one of his first employees, and for much of her time with the business, an incredibly important and influential employee, and ally, within the business. Joan vowed to continue working long after her ‘official retirement age’ and even when Joan did decide to retire from the company in 2012, packaging was still very much part of every conversation, social do, letter, card….

Joan’s husband, Don Gill, had spent much of his retirement (a very experienced and competent engineer) installing, fixing, tinkering with the machines and all manner of workings within the business, and alongside Joan, Don’s work involvement with the company ended when Joan retired.

Justin Harding joined the business in 2012, from a packaging background, with the rather daunting task of filling Joan’s boots. Thankfully, a period of crossover allowed Joan, Justin and Chris to work together in order for a seamless transition with the change and to ensure that Justin fully understood the values and working methods of the business.

2014
;
Machinery, Retirement, Advertising, Parties....Part 3

In 2014 we have made significant steps to update the business into modern times.

Our brochure launch, to tie in with our 25th Anniversary, was soon followed by the launch of our new website in October.

Investment has also continued throughout this year. We have integrated a semi-automatic gluer to our production line earlier in the year and in September 2014 we took delivery of a new Solarco box making machine.

Alongside the Autobox, we now have the ability to run small runs of bespoke cartons as well as a wide range of corrugated wraps without the need for tooling. We are able to add benefits such as hand holes, drop-down sections as well as being able to print single colour onto small runs of bespoke cartons.

2015
;
Another year of investment

In 2015 great measures have been made in the factory to facilitate and install a case maker, which went in at the beginning of July. The new machine will be able to manufacture and finish high volume boxes with the added option of a two colour flexographic print.

2015
;
David joins the team

Whilst Chris’ children, David and Elizabeth Holdsworth, had worked for the company in their junior years, In 2015 David Holdsworth began his involvement directly with customers, sales and our supply base.

Having spent his earlier years working in all the different departments, as an office junior, floor sweeper, factory worker, van washer, and anything the company (and Chris!) generally needed doing, having completed his degree in Business Studies, David started to become involved with the business’ sales and marketing.

David’s first main project was to create a new website for the company, working alongside a local and independent web-designer. The website allowed us to develop a modern company brochure so that customers were able to interact with us online, and view our manufacturing capabilities and stock-holding.

2020
;
Covid

Covid had a significant impact on our business, as it did the greater World. The initial impact was of shortfalls in business and customers as we operated on a much smaller scale for a few months, but functional still to maintain supply to those considered as essential supplies.

As things developed, we began dealing with new customers, councils, retail customers to support those needing home delivery services for food and essential supplies, and then many of our customers turned their factories to manufacturing parts, components and general supplies for medical and safety products. We were suddenly making boxes for parts going into respiratory units, council organised food packs, sanitiser bottles and equipment, etc.

As demand for these products increased and the impact of ‘home shopping’ increased the packaging industry suddenly started to ramp up and demand overtook capacity in the market. Our earlier investments in machinery were put to the test as we began to make runs of boxes never seen before in the factory and our ability to supply customers in days rather than weeks enabled us to support local businesses and develop new business.

Lead times within the industry were extended for quite a period but our business and ability to stock hold and convert from material on the shop-floor meant that we were able to keep continuity throughout. See attached image (newspaper article)

2021
;
POST-COVID

As time and industry settled after Covid, our customer base eventually ‘returned to normal’. For 2-3 years our larger customers became more retail and leisure, and we were able to supply those, along with our historical core customer base within a more industrial, engineering sector. As time passed, the demand for leisure goods, and changes with consumer spending, has resulted in our core business returning to the industrial sectors.

We have though proven in our abilities to supply a wide range of customers and sectors. During this period we have had a transition of staff, with a number of office and factory personnel leaving the business to retire, gracefully. The business remains thankful to all those who have contributed over the years and does try to remain in contact with periodic gatherings to reminisce (not all about packaging!).

There is also sadness when former staff pass away and we have experienced that with a number of persons over recent years (and years that have followed) and our love and best wishes are always with family, friends and former colleagues.

New Box-Maker & the ability to print…

On the back of the increased demand, we heavily invested in a new box-making machinery. Technology was (is!) advancing at such a rate that we were now able to install a machine which would improve our efficiencies and through-put for making boxes.

This latest investment was for a machine which is auto-fed with in-line gluing, and a print unit to enable us to put our customer’s logo’s, references, etc on their boxes, and without the need for significant increases in quantities.

2023
;
Porter & The Platen

There was significant investment in 2023 as we took the opportunity to purchase machinery from an independent company who were ceasing trading due to retirement.

Carol and Jonathon of Porter Packaging had decided to retire and withdraw from packaging and we were part of a collective group of companies to purchase machinery, and the opportunity to connect with many of their long-standing customers.

The introduction of our hand-platen, a small die cutting machine, has given us the ability to produce smaller die cuts more efficiently, but also convert a range of other materials – such as solidboard, correx, plastic, gaskets, etc.

2024
;
Foam Press, Compactor

In 2024 we installed a foam press to improve our offerings for internal foam fittings and packaging. Before the machine, all foam fittings were hand cut and hand welded together and therefore we were restricted to shapes and designs.

Now, we can cut (press) any shape using a wide range of foams and thicknesses and weld (laminate) together to make pockets, shapes, frames – all to support/suspend/protect products in transit. The press not only cuts foam but we can also cut materials much thicker than conventional card, so honeycomb upto 100mm can be pressed on the machine.

;
Moving Forward....

Our core business of stocking and selling packaging, making cardboard boxes and fittings remains the same, and we hope that we can continue to service and supply our customer base in the local and greater areas in a manner that benefits their business, and ensures continuity of a consistent supply. As technology’s advance and improvements with the machines being built and available, the business will continue to consider when and if a time is suitable to invest.

We will endeavour to keep you posted with significant changes and activity.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our history, business. If we supply you with packaging, thank you for your business.
